It’s the way of building it around the characters. Then I created it based on the rhythm of the last two pictures. Eric was sort of my resident expert about what he knew from writing about the world of the characters. But I’d like to do my thing with the characters-would you be O.K.?” I’m only going to do it if from page one I can do my thing. To be honest with you, Eric’s script is a completely different animal. Were the voiceovers in the original script, or is that something you brought? You never know until you bring it into the world. You love what you’re doing and you love the characters, and you look at each other and say, “Are we crazy, or is this thing special?” And when the New York critics actually said anything-I had never gotten anything from them-I texted the cast and said, “See, we’re not crazy.” Because you’re there, and you think this is really cool, but maybe it’s just us. It’s twice as big a picture and it’s not as much time. It was more intense than the last two pictures. Jennifer Lawrence was the last person to get announced in the cast. People and their agents don’t deliberate. That can be a very useful thing in terms of focus and energy and striking while the iron is hot.
We care because we use that urgency and shortness of time to make us double down.

I don’t think anybody cares how long it takes you to make a movie they just care if it’s good. You use the process to help the energy of the film. If that had happened, we wouldn’t have released it.
